FAQs

About the house, the perfumer, the fragrances, and how to wear and care for our extraits. The unscripted answers to everything that actually matters.

Part One

About the house

01. The brand

What is Spiteful August?

Spiteful August is a rebellious indie fragrance house based in Orihuela Costa, Spain. Co-founded by Scott Wolf and Ryan Fox, we hand-blend Extraits de Parfum in small batches — designed to provoke rather than please.

Every fragrance is created entirely by hand using traditional essential oils, natural resins, real absolutes, and sharp modern aroma chemicals. We are deliberately not for everyone.

02. Origin

Where is Spiteful August made?

Every bottle is hand-blended in our workshop in Orihuela Costa, on the Costa Blanca coast of Spain. We operate online across the Europe & UK, and from our physical store at Flamenca Beach Centro Comercial, Orihuela Costa — where customers can experience the full collection in person.

03. The perfumer

Who creates Spiteful August fragrances?

Each fragrance is composed by Scott Wolf — a self-taught perfumer working from instinct rather than formal classical training. Scott approaches scent like a sculptor approaches material: shaping, layering, and refusing to over-correct the raw imperfections that make a fragrance feel alive.

04. The name

What does the name "Spiteful August" mean?

The name comes from the Latin word augustus — meaning majestic, worthy of reverence. The spiteful is our rebellion: a deliberate refusal to be polite, palatable, or predictable.

Spiteful August exists in the tension between reverence and revolt.

05. The philosophy

What does Spiteful August stand for?

We don't create perfumes to smell beautiful. We create them to feel alive. Where traditional houses aim for smoothness, harmony, and instant likability, we lean into contradiction — the tense spaces between opposing emotional states: clean and dirty, warm and cold, luminous and decaying.

We preserve imperfections deliberately, allowing our fragrances to bloom out of tension rather than perfection.

Part Two

The fragrances

06. Cárda

What does Cárda smell like?

Cárda opens with an unapologetic smack of heavy, raw aromatic cardamom that breaks open into a fresh, exotic green brightness, enveloped by the juicy sweetness of ripe Williams pear and rich bourbon vanilla.

As it warms against your skin, the spice softens into a sparkling, almost sherbety effervescence, anchored by a clean, radiant woody backbone.

Bold · Disorienting · Unexpected
07. Bohemia

What does Bohemia smell like?

Bohemia is a massive, unapologetic dose of dark, earthy patchouli swirled into a rich, buttery wave of coconut milk and vanilla cream.

As it settles, it becomes hot, animalic, and impossible to ignore — clinging long after the night is gone. A dark, neo-hippie gourmand. Take it or leave it.

Deep · Addictive · Decadent
08. Coya

What does Coya smell like?

Coya opens with an explosive neon snap of fresh green mandarin and exotic, sun-drenched tamarind. At its heart is a velvety bloom of honeyed rose de mai, creating an addictive illusion of juicy peach flesh and sensual tropical warmth.

Hidden in the background is the shadow of aged leather and creamy exotic woods — leaving a radiant golden halo that lingers on skin for hours.

Sunlit · Sensual · Twisted
09. For everyone

Are Spiteful August fragrances unisex or genderless?

Yes. Our fragrances are unapologetically genderless. They belong to no one except the person wearing them.

We don't believe scent has a gender — we believe it has a personality.

10. Ethics

Are Spiteful August fragrances vegan and cruelty-free?

All Spiteful August fragrances are cruelty-free. Animal testing for cosmetics has been illegal across the European Union since 2013, and we have never tested on animals.

Our extraits use a combination of plant-derived naturals and clean modern synthetic aroma molecules; the majority of our formulations are vegan. If you have specific concerns about a particular ingredient, contact us via the studio email and we'll send you the full INCI breakdown.

11. Positioning

How does Spiteful August compare to Byredo, Le Labo, or D.S. & Durga?

Spiteful August sits in the same niche fragrance category — independent in spirit, concept-led, with each fragrance designed to tell a story.

What sets us apart: our fragrances are formulated as Extraits de Parfum (a higher concentration than the Eau de Parfum standard most niche brands ship), and we deliberately preserve raw imperfections and tension in our formulations rather than smoothing them out.

We are a hand-blended, small-batch Spanish indie house, working directly with Mediterranean citrus, resins, and absolutes sourced regionally.

Part Three

Both sizes are travel-friendly under standard EU and TSA 100ml carry-on liquid limits.

Part Four

Wearing & applying

17. Longevity

How long do they last on the skin?

All three of our debut fragrances are formulated as Extraits de Parfum — the highest concentration in the perfumery hierarchy. They carry an exceptionally dense concentration of raw resins, natural oils, and aroma chemicals designed to evolve over hours and hold a persistent presence on the skin.

Expect base notes still detectable on skin and fabric well into the next day.

18. Application

How should I apply it?

Because our formulas preserve raw imbalances and friction, they interact aggressively with your specific skin biology. A scent that opens with high humidity on one person may present as dry wood on another. This is the point. The fragrance becomes yours on contact.

Do not rub your wrists together after spraying. This shears the top notes and alters the psychological dry down. Spray onto bare skin pulse points and the crease between your elbows, and let it breathe.

19. Fabric

Can I spray it on my clothing?

Yes — and you should. For maximum impact and extreme longevity, spray our extraits directly onto your clothing alongside your bare skin.

While skin chemistry causes a perfume to shift and evolve rapidly, textiles and heavy fabrics hold onto the complex base notes for days. The juice clings to fibres, locking in the dense woods and heavy resins so the scent trail lasts significantly longer as you move.

Note: Due to the high concentration of raw, natural oils, exercise care when spraying directly onto delicate, pale, or ultra-fine luxury silks. Always test a hidden seam first.

Part Five

Care & safety

20. Travel shock

My fragrance smells "off" — what's happening?

Because our creations rely heavily on raw botanical extracts and live materials, extreme temperature shifts during postal transit can temporarily disorient or mute the formula. This is a well-known phenomenon called travel shock.

When your parcel arrives, we highly recommend letting the bottles sit undisturbed in a dark, cool space for two to three days before your first spray. Allowing the liquid to settle restores its true depth, friction, and intended structural volume.

21. Sediment

Why does mine look slightly different from my friend's?

Because Scott composes our fragrances by hand with raw resins, real absolutes, and cold-pressed plant matter, you may occasionally spot microscopic clouding or slight tonal shifts from one batch to the next.

These imperfections are the honest signatures of unfiltered indie perfumery and have zero impact on the safety or raw power of the juice. They are the opposite of a flaw — they are proof the perfume was made by a human, not a machine.

22. Safety

Is it safe for sensitive skin?

Our workshop operates in strict alignment with European cosmetic safety mandates. We blend using a deliberate crossover of rich naturals and clean, modern synthetics — every formula passes the full IFRA and EU regulatory standards before it reaches a bottle.

A complete breakdown of potential allergens naturally occurring within our Spanish citrus and raw materials is printed clearly on the reverse side of our packaging.

If your skin is highly reactive, we advise executing a small patch test with one of our 5ml travel bottles before applying the perfume heavily.

23. Storage

How should I store my perfume?

Store your bottles upright in a cool, dark place — ideally a drawer or cabinet away from direct sunlight, radiators, or steamy bathrooms. Heat and UV light slowly degrade the raw botanical materials in extrait formulations.

Treat your bottles like the small luxury they are: out of the light, undisturbed, ready when you reach for them.

24. Shelf life

Does Spiteful August perfume expire?

An unopened bottle stored properly in a cool, dark place will hold its full character for at least three years from manufacture.

Once opened, the fragrance is at its most alive in the first 18–24 months as it interacts with oxygen. After that, base notes deepen and top notes may fade slightly — a natural evolution that many wearers actually prefer.
